Climbers depend on ice tools as highly specialized versions of modern ice axes, often referred to broadly as ice axes or technical axes, used primarily in challenging ice climbing situations. These tools are typically used by two climbers during each pitch, but can be shared among multiple people in certain situations such as top-rope-anchored climbs, where only one person is actively climbing at a time. In contrast, traditional ice axes are usually carried by one climber for the duration of their journey across snow or glaciers, and are often referred to as "traveling axes," "walking axes," or "general mountaineering axes" in order to distinguish them from tools.
