An ice tool is an extension of the versatile ice axe, used specifically in ice climbing for challenging terrain.[1][2] Ice tools are typically paired, one per climber, during a pitch, allowing them to be shared among multiple climbers in situations like top-rope-anchored climbs. In contrast, a standard ice axe is usually carried by each person for the duration of their journey across snow or glaciers. When referring to an ice tool as simply an ice axe, classic ice axes are often called traveling axes, walking axes, or general mountaineering axes to distinguish them from specialized tools. In vertical ice climbing, two ice tools are required to maintain balance and repositioning. The climber, supported by cramponed feet, uses each tool in turn to keep the body's center of mass directly above their toes, while moving the other tool to a higher position. This allows the climber to raise their body weight with their legs, setting the stage for repeating the process.
