Human beings use specialized ice tools as a modified version of modern ice axes, often referred to simply as an ice axe or technical axe, in order to tackle challenging ice climbing routes. These ice tools are used by two climbers at a time and are typically shared among group members during top-rope-anchored climbs. In contrast, classic ice axes are used individually for extended periods of time while traversing snow or glaciers. In some regions, classic ice axes are referred to as traveling axes, walking axes, or general mountaineering axes in order to distinguish them from specialized tools. To climb vertical ice formations successfully, climbers require two ice tools to maintain balance and reposition themselves effectively. With one tool in use and the other held above, climbers can shift their body weight with their legs, allowing them to repeat the process of ascending the ice face.
