Icarus was a mortal man whose father, Daedalus, designed intricate mechanisms to facilitate their escape from captivity. Their predicament began when Minos had confined them on the island of Crete. To free themselves, Daedalus constructed two sets of wings using wax and feathers. Icarus was warned repeatedly by his father about the importance of flying carefully between low-flying clouds where temperatures drop sharply. Despite these instructions, Icarus was impatient to test the limits of flight beyond them.
