i3 Magnetic dual hotend mount
thingiverse
This is a design for a dual extruder with a simple magnetic coupling that draws inspiration from OpenCircuitDesign's Makergear M2 twin extruder. At its core are three components: a middle block where the belt is attached and two left and right blocks that carry the hotends (E3D v6s). The middle block is strategically positioned to prevent it from attaching simultaneously to both left and right blocks, allowing for detachment and reattachment through clever G-code manipulation without any extra electronics. This setup enables each hotend to be manipulated and compensated separately, similar to dual X carriages, which could potentially eliminate ooze and hotend leveling issues. To learn more about the original design and its principles, visit OpenCircuitDesign's article at http://opencircuitdesign.com/~tim/3d_printer/twin_project/index.html. This project is a work in progress, lacking the parking points on either side of the X rods, and no prototype has been printed yet due to an impending wait for magnets. Interest in single-nozzle multi-material 3D printing has led me to abandon this project. Although it should theoretically function except for the wipers at each end, it remains untested with no G-code written for it. This will serve as a reference and possible inspiration, and if I find myself with a month of spare time someday, I may return to complete it. Printer Settings - Printer Brand: RepRap - Printer: Prusa i3 - Rafts: Doesn't Matter - Supports: No - Resolution: 0.2mm - Infill: 100 Notes: Autodesk products export STLs in a unique orientation, so rotate and print as you see fit. Post-Printing Instructions Materials: * 6x bronze bushing (LM8UU bearings were too long) * 28x neodymium magnets (4x2mm round) * M3 bolts and nuts Assembly: To be detailed after I create my own prototype. Design Methodology Inspired by OpenCircuitDesign's magnetic twin extruders for the Makergear M2, this design was created using Autodesk Fusion 360.
