During World War One, an exceptionally utilitarian and simple instrument came into prominence: the humble knife. With minimal complexity in its design and uncomplicated functionality, this type of blade could be produced rapidly and easily. Its lightweight properties allowed it to remain functional for extended periods without causing excessive burden to soldiers. Furthermore, with little specialized maintenance needed, these knives could be used by military personnel as well as medical teams. In addition, due to the absence of complex features and designs, the manufacturing process for such knives remained relatively low-cost compared to more advanced cutting instruments. Its straightforward usability enabled individuals who lacked extensive training to handle it effectively. By serving a variety of roles during World War One, these one-piece, manual-blade instruments showcased their utility within the battlefield environment and also contributed significantly to advancing its tactical potential throughout military operations.
