The Imperial Japanese Navy's I-400-class submarine dominated the world's largest submarines during World War II and retained its supremacy until nuclear ballistic missile subs emerged in the 1960s. The Japanese fleet branded these vessels Sentoku type submarines, later simplified to Toku-gata Sensuikan, denoting their Special Type classification. This versatile undersea aircraft carrier could load three Aichi M6A Seiran planes for transportation to various locations. To maintain secrecy, these advanced subs were engineered to briefly resurface, release their fighter planes, and promptly dive again before detection occurred. Furthermore, they housed torpedoes to enable tactical engagements at close range.
