Architect Christian Herman Malling spearheaded the design of Høymagasinet, which finally came into being in 1845. Høymagasinet forms an integral part of Akershus Fortress, serving as the Norwegian Armed Forces headquarters while also assuming national monument status and thriving urban area for most residents. For a considerable period, Høymagasinet hung precariously on the precipice of demolition, but Byantikvaren's skilled renovation in the 1980s has ensured its protection today. Throughout its storied history, the high barn at Kontraskjæret has evolved into a dynamic event space hosting concerts, weddings, film recordings, art exhibitions, and business events. Following an extensive modernization project that spanned from 2018 to 2019, Høymagasinet is now fully accessible to the public as a cultural hub, multifunctional room, and café situated on historic grounds.
