I wanted to install a Thunderbolt 4 expansion card, but the design of the Y40 restricts full height cards. Because I couldn't find a half height card from any manufacturer, I had to get creative. Using a 4x riser sourced from amazon (link below), I was able to snake it between the 16x riser cables and install the card behind my GPU. The bracket picks up the existing screws (no extra holes required) and using the provided spacers or plastic washers, you can pad the bracket to not interfere with the 16x riser cable. The result is the ability to sneak a full height expansion card behind the GPU. The standoffs on the bracket are designed to allow for M3 threaded brass inserts, which are now readily available online. I have also included the small bracket that I had used to brace the card against the half height slots, but I am not sure how much use it will be given that I have only tested it with a single use case. If installed, remove your GPU 2. Unscrew the two screws holding down the PCB for the 16x riser 3. Place a spacer over each screw hole, then align the riser adapter bracket over the screw holes and spacers. 4. Re-tighten the screws being careful not to overtighten and cause damage. 5. Gently adjust the 16x riser cables to allow room for the 4x riser cables to pass between 6. Pass the 4x riser cables through the 16x riser cables and install into an appropriate PCIe slot on your motherboard 7. Using M3 machine screws, fasten the 4x riser to the adapter bracket, being careful not to overtighten and strip the brass inserts. This process has worked for me, allowing me to utilize a thunderbolt 4 expansion card in my Y40 for the past month problem free. However, I cannot guarantee that it will work in every scenario and I cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss as a result of attempting this modification.
