*Hyperloop* Faces: 207131 Verts: 212020 The Hyperloop is a visionary high-speed transportation system pioneered by entrepreneur Elon Musk, featuring reduced-pressure tubes where pressurized capsules glide on an air cushion powered by linear induction motors and air compressors. Musk unveiled the outline of his original Hyperloop concept in August 2013 through a preliminary design document, which outlined a notional route spanning from the Los Angeles region to the San Francisco Bay Area, mirroring the Interstate 5 corridor for most of its length. Preliminary calculations indicated that such a route could achieve an estimated journey time of just 35 minutes, allowing passengers to traverse the 350-mile (560 km) route at an average speed of approximately 600 mph (970 km/h), with a top speed of 760 mph (1,200 km/h). Initial cost estimates for the LASF notional route included in the white paper were US$6 billion for a passenger-only version and US$7.5 billion for a slightly larger-diameter version transporting passengers and vehicles; however, transportation analysts questioned whether the system could be constructed within that budget. Musk has explicitly open-sourced Hyperloop technology, encouraging others to take his ideas and further develop them. As a result, several companies have been formed, and numerous interdisciplinary student-led teams are working tirelessly to advance the technology. Designs for test tracks and capsules are currently being refined, with construction of a full-scale prototype 5-mile (8 km)-track scheduled to commence in 2016. Moreover, a subscale pod design competition is underway on a short 1 mile (2 km) test track, with test runs expected later in 2016.
