I'm working on a redesign of the X carriage right now. With this design, you can potentially gain about 20mm of printing space. You don't need to print out an entirely new X-carriage to use this upgrade. I've attached the FreeCad file so you can work with it yourself if you're interested. Update: February 18, 2017 I just finished creating a new prototype that combines the X-Carriage and E3D mount into one object. This will likely be a challenging print due to its complexity, but I've optimized it as much as possible without sacrificing strength or durability.
