Just in time for XMas, give a gift to your geeky boss or partner! The hypeosaur makes it possible to visualize hypecycle elements, like those found on Wikipedia's Hype Cycle page. To create this thing, you'll need a laser cutter. With some extra work, it should also be 3D printable (try using OpenScad to extrude from the SVG). Hypeosaurs are hybrids of supersaurus and theropods - long necks that eat flowers and bi-pedal meat-eaters. The drawing was made by combining various Wikipedia pictures. Essential files include: hypeosaure-lasercut-model.svg: This is the hypeosaur itself, requiring 5mm material stabilizer.svg: To stabilize, push into the feet from the bottom (and other places if you like) - 3mm material required (else it won't fit) hype-label.svg: Hype element (add text to it, consider reducing its height but keep the width) - 3mm material Extra files: .prep files allow tuning sizes and other stuff .set files include label sets, label-umn-edutech-set.svg includes all elements from http://hypecycle.umn.edu/ 2016 edition. To create your own set of labels, you can just edit label-empty-set.svg. We used the Verdana font and size of 9 or 10. Make sure that the lettering is either black or full blue or both (else change the settings in your laser print driver). Alternatively, start from hype-label.svg, alter its height and duplicate 20 times. Instead of creating a hyposaur from two hypeosaur plates, you also could use a single one. This is why the labels also have an inset in the middle. Also notice that the mouth of one can bite the tail of another, reflecting the fact that Gartner's hype cycle model is not always accurate. In particular in education, it takes several 10-15 year cycles to get something going. Print Settings Printer: Trotec Speedy 100R laser cutter Notes: The hypeosaur can be made with a laser cutter. Materials (Plywood, MDF, etc. also can do) 5mm Plexiglas for the hypeosaur 3mm Plexiglas for the labels and support elements Settings for the Trotec 100R 50W (adapt if you use another material) 5mm cutting (red): power = 100%, speed = 0.8, 4000Hz 3mm cutting (red): power = 100%, speed = 1, 4000Hz engraving (blue and black): power = 100%, speed = 50, DPI = 500 How I Designed This The drawing of the Hypeosaur was made in Inkscape by combining elements from 2-3 different Wikipedia drawings plus some envelope editing. Casings for the labels were made with the Generate from Path-> Scatter extensions (read https://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/Using_Inkscape_for_laser_cutting#Working_with_patterns for details). The prep files will help creating your own beast.
