The hyoid bone, or tongue-bone, is a unique, free-floating facial skull bone situated between the mandible and third cervical vertebra. Formed from the second and third pharyngeal arches, it initially consists of a horseshoe body and two pairs of horns in newborns. In adulthood, greater cornua typically fuse with the corpus. Unattached to other bones, it's the easiest to break but well-protected by muscles and ligaments, making hyoid fractures rare. This educational model was created using computed tomography scans for those studying anatomy.
