Hydroponic Grow Station

History

After one year of designing, testing and making a complete prototype, and then six months of running the system, I finally got to the point where I wanted to share my overkill project. This project was made because I always wanted a AeroGarden grow station, but it was hard to get it shipped to where I live in Norway. So I made a bad decision to just make it myself!

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDVVfWXAvA4"></oembed>

What it is

This is a fully automated grow station that only needs refilling of water/nutrient mix. The base holds the LED driver, transformer, air pump, fan, relay board and main controller with sensors. The top holds the LED panel, a fan and temp sensor. The arm is adjustable in height.

LED panel

The LED panel for this unit is designed and made by myself. It is a 100 watt panel with Bosh and Samsung LED diodes.

Electronics

The unit uses a custom made PCB with SAMD21 and ESP8266 as the brains of the operation. It sets up on your local wi-fi, and everything is managed through a web interface. The LED panel, the fans and the air pump is all controlled by the brain.

How to print this

All parts are printed in PETG since the are in risk of being in contact with water. All parts are printed in 0.15 or 0.20 layer height. The only part that's hard to get right is the container that holds the water. To get it rock solid water tight I had to do a lot of trail and error. I ended up printing it with 0.20 layer height and a just a bit of over extrusion. This will heavily relay on your printer and precision.

Btw I printed everything without support.

What's next

Everything will be open sourced very soon. I really hop this project could spark some interest out there in the gardening community. As a YouTuber I have already a few videos on the project, And there is so much more to come. As every single piece of this project is made by me (the 3D model, the LED panel and the electronics) it might be a bit hard for everyone to make this, but I hope this is a great start for someone that wants to play with a project like this.

Oh, and yeah, I will update this post with links to GitHub when I get it up there very soon!

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDKS9MXyY0Q"></oembed>

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-zLqRGTX_M"></oembed>

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yZvxRU8zUg"></oembed>
