The project aims to show an innovative design of a multipurpose offshore platform thatproduces green hydrogen on-site to fulfill the energy demand of a fleet of Marine Cloud Brightening(MCB) spray vessels to fight climate change. MCB is a solar radiation management (SRM) techniquethat aims to artificially reflect solar radiation with the modification of clouds using sea water aerosols.MCB vessels use energy for its displacement and sea water aerosol production, and due to its highenergy density, hydrogen is presented as an efficient solution for this demand. The project presents asystem solution of an off-shore platform infusing renewable energies, electrolyzer systems for thelong-term storage of the energy in hydrogen and quick refueling stations. Throughout the report, themain benefits and risks of the system are discussed, proposing eight potential locations ofdisplacement and showing that the preliminary cost analysis suggest a 10-year payback period for theplatform. Considering the eight proposed areas of deployment, literature research suggests that withthe deployment of 188 ships per location, 1500 spray vessels would be needed to maintain the Earth’stemperature steady in the current scenario without any reduction in greenhouse gases emissions.Moreover, this system can be feasibly deployed in strategic locations, enhancing the global effect ofMCB, and at the same time boosting the energy transition of the global shipping industry to hydrogenpowered ships.Disclaimer : As support for the elaboration of the generic components of the platform, the designs of the solar panels, wind turbines and fan of the vessel were obtained from the open source GrabCAD webpage.
