The model serves to explain the hydration of ions. An ion is able to surround itself with four water molecules. The arrangement of hydrogen or oxygen atoms towards the ion and the creation of ion-dipole interactions can be developed. At least one cation, one anion, and eight water molecules are needed for each student.
