A Hydrant (from Greek hydor, water) is a faucet for the removal of water from a water distribution system. As a standard procedure, hydrants installed by the water supplier are used as part of the central firewater supply system of cities and communities. It empowers users to extract water from the public water network (collection water supply) to firefighters, but also to public entities (like street departments, municipal businesses) and private entities (such as road maintenance companies, tent festival organizers). Hydrants are utilized to rinse, ventilate or decompress a pipeline. In the event of a pipe malfunction, they are intended for producing emergency connections with hoses. Special indicators in the public area point out underground hydrants. The term is also widespread for collection points for other liquids, like jet fuel from a pipeline.
