The M1944 Hyde Carbine was George Hyde's endeavor to create a light rifle for the US military forces, inspired by the Thompson Submachine Gun he designed. This carbine featured an original .30 caliber and was based on M1921/27 variants; however, its high production cost and weight hindered mass-production due to wartime constraints. To enhance efficiency, it incorporated a quick barrel change mechanism like the MG42 and utilized pressed steel components for lightness. Despite not being adopted, the M1944 Hyde Carbine outperformed the M1 Carbine in reliability and accuracy and even offered select fire functionality, resembling the StG-44's capabilities.
