The specimen, a male individual, was collected by E. Heller on July 10, 1911, along the Lakiundu River in East Africa, which was then a British colony. The specimen was made available for scanning by Dr. Blaire Van Valkenburgh of UCLA to the University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility. Dr. Timothy Rowe from The University of Texas at Austin secured funding for the scan through a grant from the National Science Foundation's Digital Libraries Initiative and with additional support from Dr. Van Valkenburgh.
