The Ubis hot end, which I had originally planned to use on my Printrbot, was a game-changer in terms of reliability and performance. However, it wasn't compatible with my Huxley printer, so I decided to create a custom tool support that would allow me to use the Ubis hot end on both printers. After researching different models, I mashed up three excellent designs from other designers to create a unique solution that met my needs. I created two versions of the tool support: one short and one tall. The reason for the difference in design is that I wasn't sure how close I could position the Ubis hot end to the x-carriage without causing it to melt the material, so the short version is positioned farther away from the carriage by around 8mm. However, there are some drawbacks to using the short version. The bowden tube hits the printer's top rails, which means you lose some Z height. To address this issue, I created a tall version of the tool support that allows for full Z height and doesn't hit the top rails. This requires moving the Ubis hot end further back, so if you're printing with PLA, I recommend using the short version to avoid tool support warping over time. On the other hand, if you're printing with ABS, the tall version is a better option as it hasn't caused any warp issues even on 12-hour print sessions at high temperatures. To assemble the tool support, you'll need six self-tapping screws and two M3 bolts. I suggest wrapping Kapton tape around the top of the Ubis hot end before mounting it to prevent creeping heat and provide a better grip for the retaining bolts. My printer has a bowden tube with a screw fitting on the end, so I simply tapped directly into the plastic and screwed it in. A big thank you goes out to tdeagan, Weldingrod1, and Alzbiff for their excellent designs that inspired my creation: the tool mount, triple bearing extruder mount, and ducted fan, respectively.
