Hurricane Julio

Hurricane Julio

Hurricane Julio dominated the Eastern Pacific Ocean, its path a steady one with no landmass in sight. Before reaching hurricane status, however, Julio became the first tropical storm known to unleash a massive burst of radiation called a terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), the most intense naturally occurring light on Earth. This achievement made Julio the catalyst and prototype for an initiative to create simple 3D-printable storm models using satellite imagery. The model depicts Julio as it looked on August 7 at 2 p.m. PDT (2100 UTC), when maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h) firmly placed it in Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
