Francis Reddy Author/Origin: NASA Relevant Mission: GOES Julio, a hurricane that traversed the Eastern Pacific Ocean without posing any threat to land, turned out to be a significant discovery. Before reaching hurricane status, it produced a burst of radiation known as a terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), the highest-energy naturally occurring light on Earth. This achievement made Julio the inspiration and model for an initiative to create 3D-printable storm models from satellite imagery. The model represents Julio's appearance on August 7 at 2 p.m. PDT (2100 UTC) when its maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h) placed it firmly in Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/detail/julio-hurricane
