Huntington's disease protein structure
thingiverse
This complex is the huntingtin protein, the protein whose mutation causes Huntington's disease in families with a CAG DNA triplet repeat expansion. The model of this structure was built from purified huntingtin and HAP40 protein, which was published in Nature in 2018 by Stefan Kochanek's group at Ulm University in Germany. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29466333 Cryo-electron microscopy technology was used to solve this massive protein structure. This method involves freezing proteins in liquid ethane without the need for crystallization. The development of cryo-electron microscopy led to the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry being awarded to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, and Richard Henderson.
