Ashurnasirpal II takes aim with his bow, firing arrow after arrow at a ferocious lion charging towards him from his chariot. Behind him, two attendants stand ready to finish off the wounded beast with swift daggers. The relief carving, positioned as it would be in an ancient Assyrian palace, depicts the king's bravery and skill in hunting down lions. In another scene, Ashurnasirpal II is shown making a sacrificial offering over a lifeless lion, likely one of the very animals he hunted in this moment of triumph.
