After my Vive controllers crashed into an overhead fan/lamp, I quickly realized that replacing the broken glass shade might not be the best option. So, I grabbed my digital calipers and fired up a CAD package to create a copy of the shade's shape. I decided to print one out, thinking that if my wife liked it, I'd keep it as is, but if she didn't, I'd replace the entire lamp. The result was stunning, thanks to Colofabb's XT material, and my wife preferred keeping it over replacing the other three shades! The fan is a Hunter model, but I'm confident that this design can be scaled up or down as needed. I chose XT (PETG) for this project because of the heat generated by the incandescent bulb. Keep in mind that the file size is quite large at 43mb to ensure a smooth finish with no facets. It's possible to decimate it, though. Here are the print settings I used: * Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 * Rafts: No rafts were used * Supports: No supports were added * Resolution: A layer height of .2mm was chosen Some additional notes on my setup include: * I used Simplify 3D with two different processes. The first one had four shells for the lower layers to increase strength, where the screws hold the shade in place. For the rest of the shade, I used only two shells for better translucency. I set the top and bottom layers to "Off" and the infill to zero percent. To ensure a secure grip on the bed, I added four shells to the skirt distance and set it to 0.
