The numerous depictions of hunchbacks have sparked the notion that they held positions of prominence in ancient Mesoamerica. Starting with the Olmec peoples, these individuals were believed to possess extraordinary abilities due to their physical peculiarities. People with hunchbacks and dwarves were thought to possess supernatural attributes, appearing in Mesoamerican mythology as skybearers and linked to water deities. In later times, the court of Aztec emperor Motecuhzoma II included both hunchbacks and dwarves as jesters and advisors for religious and state matters. This object is part of "Scan The World".
