We always keep hummingbirds fed throughout the year by having one feeder filled at all times. Our current feeder from WalMart lacks a perch, forcing them to hover in mid-air while feeding. In contrast, we've had feeders with perches in the past and know that they stay longer when they can rest comfortably. The removable top on our feeder made it easy to design a perch that fits snugly between the top and base cup without compromising cleaning or assembly. The thin mating line doesn't affect the parts' alignment. Designed for a 116mm (4.57") diameter top cover, you'll need to scale this design in your slicer if your cover has a different size. Since installing our custom perch, we've seen hummingbirds occupy all three feeder positions simultaneously multiple times - something that rarely happened when they had to hover. Clearly, they prefer the comfort and convenience of having a place to rest while feeding.
