I loved gzumwalt's original hummingbird automaton but struggled to get it working due to excessive friction from 100% 3D printed components. Despite excellent print quality, I couldn't overcome binding issues no matter what adjustments I made. To resolve this problem, I redesigned several components to incorporate ball bearings and metal socket cap screws with brass threaded inserts. This modification significantly reduced friction and allowed the automaton to function smoothly. The base remains largely unchanged from gzumwalt's original design, except for the two arms connecting the hummingbird to the transmission. Required hardware is listed below, sourced primarily from McMaster.com. While prices may vary, alternative sources can be found by searching for specific sizes. Amazon offers significantly cheaper options for bearings. 5972K211 x2 7804K128 x5 91239A224 x2 94510A030 x11 91290A113 x11 91166A210 x22 91290A125 x2 Brass inserts require heat setting with a soldering iron to secure properly, while bearings press-fit into the prints.
