The Humber Bay Arch Bridge, also known as the Humber River Arch Bridge or Gateway Bridge for locals, stands tall as a pedestrian and bike-friendly arch bridge near Lake Shore Boulevard West in Toronto's southern sector, Canada. Constructed in the mid-1990s, it boasts an impressive 139-metre length with a transparent 100-metre clear span over the Humber River to ensure its delicate ecosystem remains untouched. It consists of two steel pipes measuring 47 inches in diameter that form into parallel arches rising above the ground by 70 feet and are suspended with 44 stainless-steel chains, each at a thickness of 2 inches. These structures keep the entire bridge platform stable and firmly connected to their respective foundations. At its core, concrete-filled caskets dug down to the bedrock beneath support the base while allowing water to circulate around them undisturbed below 98 feet underground, keeping both sides strong throughout the harsh weather changes all year round. Design work was started in 1994 by prominent architects from Montgomery and Sisam based in Toronto in partnership with the respected Delcan Corporation for infrastructure solutions. Eventually completed through meticulous collaboration of renowned contractor Sonterland Construction and a consistent drive towards achieving perfection. Over the years, the project garnered significant local recognition in terms of architectural excellence that made an impact not only visually but functionally too. Its original task to create smooth pathways across both Old Toronto's municipal sections before the current formation came together. This iconic structure now brings together old neighbourhoods, once separated under city rule until 2010, in seamless connectivity when residents look out at its breathtaking view day or night and reminisce about simpler days when there wasn't so much noise yet people enjoyed simple pleasures found here like walking near its majestic gateway - still standing strong.
