Human beings have twelve thoracic vertebrae that make up the middle portion of their vertebral column, sandwiched between the cervical vertebrae at the top and the lumbar vertebrae below. As humans mature, these thoracic vertebrae become larger in size as they move downward, with the lower ones significantly bigger than the upper ones. A distinctive feature of these vertebrae is the presence of facets on their sides for articulation with rib heads and facets on transverse processes for connection with tubercles of ribs. In humans, thoracic vertebrae are conventionally numbered from T1 to T12, starting closest to the skull and extending downward along the spine into the lumbar region.
