Selecting Structures of the Human Heart The human heart is a muscular organ that beats approximately 100,000 times per day, pumping over two thousand gallons of blood throughout its circulatory system. To better understand how this vital organ functions, let's take a closer look at its various structures. 1. Atria: The atria are the upper chambers of the heart where oxygen-depleted blood returns to be pumped back out into circulation. There are two atria in total; one for the right side and one for the left side of the body. 2. Ventricle: The ventricles are the lower chambers of the heart that pump blood throughout the body. Like the atria, there are two ventricles - one on the right side and one on the left side. 3. Septum: The septum is a wall of tissue that separates the right and left sides of the heart. This thin membrane helps to ensure that oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood do not mix. 4. Valves: Heart valves are crucial for maintaining proper blood flow through the heart. They allow blood to move in one direction while preventing it from flowing backward. 5. Coronary Arteries: The coronary arteries supply oxygenated blood directly to the heart muscle itself. These vital vessels branch off from the aorta and supply nutrients necessary for the heart's survival. 6. Tricuspid Valve: The tricuspid valve is located between the right atrium and ventricle, ensuring that blood flows correctly into the ventricle during systole. 7. Pulmonary Valve: The pulmonary valve separates the right ventricle from the pulmonary artery, allowing deoxygenated blood to be pumped out of the heart and into the lungs for oxygenation. 8. Mitral Valve: The mitral valve is positioned between the left atrium and ventricle, regulating blood flow during systole to prevent backflow into the atria. 9. Aortic Valve: The aortic valve sits at the junction of the left ventricle and aorta, preventing oxygenated blood from flowing backward into the heart. Each component plays a vital role in maintaining proper cardiac function and overall health.
