A human-headed winged lion, or lamassu, from Neo-Assyrian times (883-859 B.C.) during Ashurnasirpal II's rule was found at Nimrud in northern Mesopotamia. This alabaster sculpture is 10 ft. 3 1/2 in. tall and has been gifted to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by John D. Rockefeller Jr., in 1932 (accession number: 32.143.2).
