This massive wooden statue originated from Mangareva, a Gambier Island located in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is believed to be an icon of Rongo, the agricultural deity who brings forth rain and bountiful breadfruit harvests. Very few such statues managed to survive the devastation that swept through the island as it transitioned to Christianity in the 1830s. Meanwhile, The London Missionary Society initiated its work in Madagascar back in 1818. Nonetheless, Queen Ranavalona I vehemently opposed this foreign presence on her land. Consequently, the missionaries relinquished their efforts on the island during the 1830s and returned after her passing in 1861. This object is part of "Scan The World".
