The Spruce Goose, officially registered as NX37602, was a prototype military transport designed and engineered by Hughes Aircraft Company. Conceived for use as a strategic transatlantic flight during World War II, its completion fell behind schedule, leaving it ineffective in wartime conditions. A mere 30-second maiden flight on November 2, 1947, served as the aircraft's sole operational instance; beyond this initial flight, production remained stalled at one unit alone. Constructed mainly from wood to meet wartime restrictions on aluminum usage and concerns over excessive weight, critics bestowed upon it the disparaging nickname 'Spruce Goose,' though in reality it was largely built with birch timber. Boasting an enormous wingspan of 320 feet (97m) at its largest breadth, this colossal seaplane stood as the greatest flying vessel ever built in terms of size.
