Megatherium Falange sp. of Pampa del Tamarugal. Pozo Almonte Commune. Tarapacá Region. The Tarapacá Megatherium is a massive peresozo specimen (Megatherium sp.) discovered in the Pampa del Tamarugal in 1959, at an area of ancient drainage flows within the deposition cone spreading over the existing pampa between Matilla to the East and Cuminalla towards La Huayca. In the Regional Museum, diverse records are associated with Megatherium sp., Scelidodon sp., and other species linked to the fauna of the Quaternary period (Pleistocene/Holocene), dating from 2.9 million years ago to 10,000 years back according to latest radiocarbon datings of Megatherium in Quebrada Maní, Pozo Almonte Commune.
