Falange Megatherium sp. Pampa del Tamarugal. Commune of Pozo Almonte. Tarapacá Region. The Tarapacá Megatherium is a massive prehistoric giant (Megatherium sp.) fossil discovered in 1959 on the Tamarugal pampa, specifically in an area of ancient runoff near the cone of deposition that spreads across the existing pampa between Matilla to the east and Cuminalla towards La Huayca. In the Regional Museum, there are numerous records associated with Megatherium sp., Scelidodon sp., and other species linked to the fauna of the Quaternary period (Pleistocene/Holocene), dating back 2.9 million to 10 thousand years ago according to recent radiocarbon datings of Megatherium in Quebrada Maní, Commune of Pozo Almonte.
