Human: Falange Megatherium sp. Pampa del Tamarugal. Commune of Pozo Almonte. Tarapacá Region. The Tarapacá Megatherium corresponds to a massive peresozo specimen (Megatherium sp.), discovered in the Tamarugal plain in 1959, in an area of ancient runoff on the cone of deposition spreading over the existing plain between Matilla and Cuminalla towards La Huayca. In the Regional Museum, there are various records associated with Megatherium sp., Scelidodon sp., and other species related to the fauna of the Quaternary period (Pleistocene/Holocene) 2.9 million to 10 thousand years ago (according to the latest radiocarbon dating of Megatherium in Quebrada Maní, Commune of Pozo Almonte).
