Falange Megatherium sp. Pampa del Tamarugal. Pozo Almonte Community. Tarapacá Region. The Tarapacá Megatherium corresponds to a massive peresozo specimen (Megatherium sp.), discovered in the Tamarugal pampa in 1959, in the area of ancient runoff in the cone of deposition that spreads over the existing pampa between Matilla to the East and the Cuminalla area towards La Huayca. In the Regional Museum, there are various records associated with Megatherium sp., Scelidodon sp., and other species associated with the fauna of the Quaternary period (Pleistocene/Holocene) 2.9 million to 10,000 years ago (according to the latest radiocarbon dating of Megatherium in Quebrada Maní, Pozo Almonte Community).
