History The Hubble Space Telescope is uniquely equipped with the ability to be serviced in space by astronauts. To date, a total of four servicing missions have taken place. The first mission, Servicing Mission 1, successfully corrected the telescope's imaging flaw in December 1993. Subsequent missions, including Servicing Missions 2, 3A, and 3B, repaired critical sub-systems and upgraded many observing instruments with more advanced models. However, following the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, NASA initially canceled plans for a fifth servicing mission due to safety concerns. After intense public discussion, Administrator Mike Griffin gave the green light for one final Hubble servicing mission in October 2008. Unfortunately, this was postponed until May 2009 when another critical component failed, requiring replacement.
