The HMS Aurora, a British light cruiser built to conduct close reconnaissance and counter-destroyer operations, found itself in a new role when it was transferred to the Republic of China in 1948. Just one year later, however, it defected to the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), becoming its most formidable combat vessel. In the early 1950s, plans were put into action for the HMS Aurora's refurbishment, with a focus on replacing its existing weapons and equipment with Soviet-made models.
