Last year I purchased a HP1653B logic analyzer and yesterday it released its magic smoke from the power inlet due to a faulty component. The culprit was the Schaffner FN 393-2,5-05-12, which I found online for approximately $47 excluding shipping and taxes to Romania, a price almost matching that of the unit itself. Since I didn't require the automatic switching between 110v and 220v, I decided to replace it with a C14 male AC power supply socket for panel mounting, an ON/OFF switch, and a 3A slow-blow fuse. To establish connections, I retained only pins 1 & 2 for mains voltage (220V) and pin 5 for earth. George Brown's repair guide for the HP1652B Power Inlet was also incredibly helpful. Be aware that using an unfiltered mains voltage may be less advisable than employing a unit like TDK B84771 as specified by George Brown.
