Here's a Blender file that demonstrates how to break down a model into sections using Boolean modifiers, just like I did when creating the 'Exploded T-Rex Skull'. While there are multiple ways to accomplish this, I always find myself returning to Blender for these types of tasks. Once you've overcome the initial learning curve, it becomes incredibly easy and enjoyable.
