How Hill, Downholme, Swaledale
sketchfab
This prominent hillfort occupies a commanding position atop an isolated hill, effectively controlling access to upper Swaledale while offering panoramic views of the break in the hills that leads south into the Vale of York. Visible on both the western and northern flanks of the hill are the rampart and ditch of the fort. The rampart measures 2.5 meters wide and rises 0.3 meters above the ground surface, forming a sturdy barrier. A shallow ditch, largely shaped by the natural slope of the hill, stretches 5.8 meters across. Beyond this lies a counterscarp bank, standing 1.9 meters wide and 0.5 meters above the ditch, providing an additional layer of defense.
