A hovercraft, often termed an air-cushion vehicle or ACV, is a versatile craft designed for traversing land, water, mud, ice and other surfaces. This unique vehicle is managed by an aviator as an aircraft rather than a captain as a maritime vessel. It works by using blowers to create a large volume of air beneath the hull at slightly higher pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. The resulting pressure difference lifts the hull above the surface, while a skirt enclosing this cushion safeguards the craft against damage from small obstacles. Typically, hovercrafts have a disk- or oval-shaped platform with air blowing out through peripheral slots or holes for stability purposes, giving them their recognizable rounded-rectangle shape.
