This 19th-century headstone at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota still holds a remarkably clear message thanks to superior craftsmanship. Notably, its inscription remains easy to decipher even though neighboring monuments have degraded significantly despite being built within the same time frame but up to two decades newer. Typical of upright slab monuments, rusted metal pins used for stabilization and support at the foundation have begun to disintegrate; consequently, the stone now precariously leans against its base.
