House of Dun

2 October 2019. A rough model derived from smartphone images. While on holiday in the area, I visited House of Dun near Montrose, a site definitely worth a visit. After exploring the property, I went for a walk in the grounds, which locals affectionately call the 'Den of Dun'. During my stroll, I noticed that the OS 1:25,000 map indicates a cup-marked stone within the grounds. I decided to investigate and locate this stone, finding it in a wild area near the edge of a field. This spot is likely where several stones have been cleared from the surrounding land and relocated. With only my smartphone as a camera, I took a few images despite knowing that these devices are not ideal for photogrammetry. I processed the images, which resulted in a rough model that clearly shows at least six shallow cups on the flat face of the stone. These markings were invisible to me during my field visit but are documented on Canmore.
