Measuring a dwelling's size involves calculating its living area in square footage, excluding any attached garage and non-living spaces in North America but including them when calculating the wall surface area in Europe. Houses feature a mix of spacious rooms serving specialized functions alongside small rooms for miscellaneous reasons. Common configurations include an eating/living area, sleeping quarters, separate or combined bathing and washing areas, depending on available resources. Larger residences might also incorporate features such as spa facilities, indoor pools, sports courts, or other supplementary amenities not essential to everyday living. Human history offers little documentation regarding the origin of dwellings, although its earliest forms likely derived from basic shelters built for survival purposes. Roman architect Vitruvius proposed a frame made of branches covered with mud as one possible form of ancient architecture, while Philip Tabor identified 17th-century Dutch houses as foundational models still influencing modern dwellings today. Conceptualizing the concept of "home" might best be associated with The Netherlands due to the significant capital accumulation in that region during the first three-quarters of the 17th century. This idea crystallized when wealth concentrated in domestic spaces, transforming residences into veritable abodes for their inhabitants.
