The North American House Hippopotamus, also known as the Common Hippos of Northern America, is a large, semi-aquatic mammal native to the rivers and lakes of Canada and Mexico. It belongs to the family Hippopotamidae and is one of the most recognizable creatures in its region. The house hippo is characterized by its massive size, with adults weighing up to 3,000 pounds and reaching lengths of 15 feet or more. Its body is rounded, with a short neck and legs that are well-suited for wading through water but not for running on land. The hippos have thick skin that can be up to two inches thick in some areas, which protects them from the cold waters they inhabit. Their large ears help to keep their head cool while they rest at the surface of the water or bask in the sun. Despite their size, house hippos are excellent swimmers and can stay submerged for up to five minutes before surfacing for air. In the wild, they feed on a variety of aquatic plants, including algae, grasses, and sedges.
