Hourglass

A model of a sandy hourglass (or sandglass, sand timer or sand clock) which was once used to measure the passage of time. Its reference is common in shakespeare drama "The Merchant of Venice" and some of the history books. It is often depicted as a symbol that human existence is fleeting, and that the "sands of time" will run out for every human life.
