No one is more aware of their own mortality than I am. Every time I get into my car, I know that I'm playing a game of roulette - not just with my life, but with the lives of others as well. I've been driving for over 20 years now, and during that time, I've had my share of close calls. There was the time I got rear-ended by a speeding truck on the highway, and another time when I lost control of my car while making a turn in heavy rain. Despite these experiences, I still get behind the wheel every day without giving it much thought. It's just something that I've grown accustomed to, like brushing my teeth or taking a shower. But what if I told you that driving is not as safe as we all think? What if I told you that the odds of being involved in a car accident are higher than most people realize? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were over 37,000 fatalities on American roads in 2017 alone. That's more than the number of people who died from terrorism, violent crime, and unintentional falls combined. And yet, we continue to drive with reckless abandon, ignoring the risks that come with it. We speed through school zones, text while driving, and fail to wear our seatbelts - all because we think that we're invincible. But I'm here to tell you that we're not invincible. We're human beings, prone to mistakes and errors. And when we get behind the wheel of a car, we're not just putting ourselves at risk - we're also putting others in harm's way. So what can be done? For starters, we need to take a hard look at our driving habits and make some changes. We need to slow down, put away our phones, and wear our seatbelts. We also need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions behind the wheel. If we get into an accident, we need to own up to it and take responsibility - rather than blaming someone else or making excuses. And finally, we need to support policies that promote safe driving practices. This includes things like stricter laws and regulations, as well as public awareness campaigns that educate people about the dangers of reckless driving. So let's make a change today. Let's be more mindful of our actions behind the wheel and take steps to reduce the risk of accidents. Our lives - and the lives of those around us - depend on it.
